When Nawaz was asked about being typecast in negative roles such as in movies like Gangs Of Wasseypur, Raman Raghavamong others, he said that there is a huge difference between playing different roles in the same way and different roles in different ways. For him, it’s the latter.

Further into the conversation, Nawaz was told about Sacred Games becoming the most watched Indian web series worldwide and then asked if it is easy to play characters written on books compared to the original scripts.
To this, he replied, “In books, there is a lot of information about a certain character. But when you perform, you make that character stand. There can be a lot of things, a lot of nuances, which are not there in books. One of the benefits of shooting is that a lot of things happen on the spot. Because whoever is playing that character, he is adding his own interpretation. So, I think, there are chances of it being very different. In books, there is a base. Like, of course, we took the character from the book. But, despite that, I had my own thought in it, which added on, including Anurag Kashyap, and a lot of other people.
Speaking about playing the role of Manto and how did he prepare for it, Nawaz went on to recall how he faced taunts for belonging to a lower caste and how he blended Manto’s thought process into his personal experiences.
“I used to belong to a caste. When I was in my village, they always used to taunt me about it. So for many years I fought with that, then I left my village. So when I came here (Mumbai) with that complexity and when I got this role, then that feeling of inferiority, that became fresh again. That a person who thinks that I am inferior to the people of the normal category, that’s why I have to put in more effort. That’s why if you see, while doing a performance, he wants to say a lot about himself. We used to pick up all the garbage. So, the one who doesn’t have anything, to achieve that, he wanted to join that generation, which has already taken a leap. His whole life’s effort was this. He couldn’t do that. But he wants to do it for his sons, that my children, they should take such a leap that two generations go ahead,” he concluded.
