Civilian Award and Gallantry Award is the most prestigious Award in India. The Civilian awards include Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri awards. The gallantry awards comprised of  Paramvir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Kirthi Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra awards.

Highest Civilian Award
  • The highest Civilian Award in India is “Bharat Ratna” which was established in 1954. These awards are available to every individual irrespective of their face, profession, status, & sexual orientation.
  • This award is given in honour of very excellent service and achievement in any field of human endeavour.
  • The Prime Minister directly recommends the candidates to the President for Bharat Ratna. There is no need for official advice in this case.
  • There may only be a maximum of three awards given in a single year.
  • Recipients of the Bharat Ratna receive a medal along with a certificate signed by the President.
  • The award does not carry any reward of money.
Highest Gallantry Award

Param Vir Chakra – The Param Vir Chakra Award stands as India’s highest military award which is awarded to an individual displaying courage in confronting hostile forces. The Victoria Cross was awarded to an Indian last during World War II which is equivalent to this.

Maha Vir Chakra – Maha Vir Chakra is the second-highest military honor in India and is awarded for acts of remarkable courage in the face of the enemy across various domains—land, sea, or air.

Vir Chakra – Third in precedence in the awards for wartime gallantry.

The civilian awards are given to recognized personalities in their respective field of expertise. These awards are presented to the deserving recipients by the President of India on Republic Day. The civilian awards were introduced in 1954.

For Padma Awards all persons regardless of race, occupation, position, or gender, are eligible. However, government servants, including doctors and scientists are not eligible for these awards even if they work with PSUs.

Every nomination submitted for the Padma Award undergoes review by the Padma Awards Committee which is constituted by the Prime Minister every year. The Padma Awards Committee is chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and includes the Home Secretary, Secretary to the President, and four to six distinguished individuals as members.

The committee submits its recommendations to the President and Prime Minister for their approval. Civilian Awards are categorized according to the degree of honour. The Civilian Award of India is divided into 4 types such as –

  2. Padma Vibhushan – 2nd degree of honour
  3. Padma Bhushan – 3rd degree of honour

Gallantry Awards In India

The Gallantry Awards are awarded for conspicuous acts of bravery, valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of danger. These gallantry awards are recognized twice a year – first on the occasion of Republic Day and then on the occasion of Independence Day. 

Following India’s independence, the government of India established the first three gallantry awards namely the Param Vir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra on 26 January 1950 and were deemed to have effect from the 15th August 1947. Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the only national award given in the field of cinema in India. It is India’s highest award in the field of cinema. Every year, the Directorate of National Film Festivals established by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting presents it at the National Film Awards ceremony.
