1. Academy Awards – Oscar

The Oscar, also known as the Academy Awards, is the film award presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Given annually in Los Angeles, the Oscar recognizes outstanding achievements in film for directors, actors, screenplays, and various other fields.

The Oscar trophy is a small gold-plated statue with a black metal base, crafted from britannium. Designed in the Art Deco style, the statue portrays a knight holding a sword and standing on a film reel with five wings.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), took place on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The awards were scheduled after their usual late February date to avoid conflicting with the 2022 Winter Olympics and Super Bowl LVI, with the latter being held in nearby Inglewood, California.

2. Golden Palm Award – Cannes Film Festival

Golden Palm Award is the highest award presented by the Cannes Film Festival jury for the best film of the year. It is selected from among the participating films and is held in France. The Golden Palm is one of the most prestigious awards worldwide.

Considered as one of the pioneering awards leading up to the Oscars, it was founded by film critics from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, and magazines in 1935.

Golden Lion Award is considered the highest award given by the Venice Film Festival to a film participating in the festival. Conducted by the Festival Organizing Committee in 1949, it is regarded as one of the prestigious awards in the film industry. However, after various disruptions, it was not until 1970 that the second Golden Lion Award took place.

Initially known as the Golden Lion Award of St. Mark, it underwent a name change to simply the Golden Lion Award after encountering a clash with another film accolade. It continues to serve as a platform to celebrate numerous exceptional films and gifted directors, including Renato Castellani’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Tran Anh Hung’s “Cyclo.”

6. Golden Leopard Award – Locarno International Film Festival

The Golden Leopard is the top prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, an international film festival held annually in Locarno, Switzerland since 1946. Directors in the process of getting an international reputation are allowed to be entered in the competitive selection. The winning films are chosen by a jury.

The award went under many names until it was named the Golden Leopard in 1968. The festival was not held in 1951 and the prize was not awarded in 1956 and 1982. As of 2024, René Clair is the only director to have won the award twice, winning in the first two years of the festival.

7. Grand Jury Prize ‚Äď Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival is held annually in Utah by the Sundance Institute. It is the largest independent film festival in the United States and it is the primary showcase for independent filmmakers to introduce their work.

The festival’s competition highlights documentary and dramatic films featuring the esteemed Grand Jury as the top honor in both categories. The festival was launched in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, then president of Robert Redford’s Wildwood company, aiming to draw more filmmakers to Utah.

In 1984 the Sundance Institute assumed control, renaming it the Sundance Film Festival to honor the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The Grand Jury prize stands as a premier avenue for independent filmmakers to promote their reputation.

8. Filmfare Awards

The Filmfare Awards are annual awards that honour artistic and technical excellence in the Hindi-language film industry of India. The Filmfare ceremony is one of the most famous film events in India. The awards were introduced by the Filmfare magazine of The Times Group in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards. 

They were initially referred to as the “Clare Awards” or “The Clares” after¬†Clare Mendon√ßa, the editor of¬†The Times of India,¬†and modeled after the¬†Academy Awards.

10. BAFTA Awards – British Academy of Film and Television Arts

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, also known as the BAFTA Awards, is an annual accolade presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). It is most prestigious as it is regarded as the UK equivalent of the Oscars, the awards were first introduced in 1949.

In 1958, the Academy collaborated with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors, to support, develop, and promote several numerous art forms by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring artists, and benefiting the public. The accolade features a stage mask designed by Mitzi Cunliffe and the ceremony typically takes place in February, preceding the Oscars.
